An audit of an earthing or lightning protection system is required when it is recognised that the documentation and planned maintenance testing…

and inspection results on file are inadequate to ensure safety.

When the client is uncertain as the the state of and extent of his earthing and lightning protection infrastructure, and to get a grip on this life saving asset base, an audit is indicated in order to quantify what components are present to protect him, and in what state are those component parts.  On completion of an audit, a review of the earthing and lightning protection requirements is compared with the findings, and from this a gap analysis can prepared.  The gap analysis will illuminate the  shortcomings and or excesses found, permitting the definition of rectification steps required to ensure that the risks are catered for so that safety can be assured.

To separate earthing from lighting protection cannot be done safely, one of the fundamental design parameters of any successful earthing and lightning…

protection system is the successful integration of the these two elements.  While this is easier to achieve in a domestic environment where the incoming earth is provided by the energy supply company who provide the live, neutral, and earthing conductors, with certification of the suitability of the sub station earthing someone elses problem. Therefore that lighting protection consultant need concentrate only on the lightning risks and not concern himself with earth fault currents and sub station earth electrode system design.  Thereafter, the air termination system design can be defined, the best down conductor solution (keeping in mind separation distance requirements) can be defined, and from that, a suitable earth termination system can be designed with due cognisance being taken of the local soil resistivity to ensure the configuration and resistance decided upon will meet the requirements of being able to safely shunt the enormous energies a lightning strike can impose on these systems.
A good design will be based on a thorough risk analysis being carried out in accordance with SANS 62305 part 2, identifying all the potential risks a lightning stroke can provide, and then catering for that possible damage or destruction with equipment which will nullify the risks.  This can include externally mounted equipment, bonding to ensure the uni-potential platform, and internal protection measures including surge protection where required.

As such the importance of getting this installation work done correctly is critical as this will be the first line of defence against one of natures most destructive forces.  As a consequence of this, it is important that the material being used has been manufactured in accordance with the applicable codes of practise, and that he installer installs them in accordance with the relevant aspects of the codes of practise and then also to the manufacturers instruction.  With the variety of code of practise compliant manufacturer specific hardware specialization, increasingly sophisticated installation methodologies are required which require increasingly specialized training.  Make sure your team on site performing your installations have the approved manufacturer training and at the same time, that they take their own safety as importantly as yours.  Be sure a professional crew undertakes your safety system installation so that you can rest secure in the knowledge that before, during and after that catastrophic lightning strike, your people, your equipment your processes, and your profits are safe. implementation of a certifiable design.  What constitutes a certifiable design, well for an earthing system, this is dictated by the earth fault current, the trip time, and lastly, the soil resistivity.  When these variables are plugged into the code of practise for earth mat design, a compliant solution can be provided, which when installed, can be certified, and with some testing, the predictions of the design can be measured and the design validated.  For a lightning protection system, the compliance of the design is completely dictated by the risk analysis as defined in SANS 62305 part 2.  This process will allow the designer to highlight where a lightning event could introduce injury, damage or disruption to critical processes.  When this risk analysis is evaluated in terms of protective measures that can be implemented to eliminate or mitigate the risks identified, a certifiable design can be executed.  After this, a competent installation crew can implement the design and a certifiable installation can be evaluated for compliance.
With all the relevant documentation available for study, the installation quality control plan, the post install checkout, and the appropriate testing completed with acceptable results, the lightning protection installation can be certified as compliant and safe.
